Hampton University Museum

Three decades of partnership, countless stories told.

Hampton University Museum has been a client for more than 30 years, a relationship built on deep understanding of institutional storytelling and cultural preservation. We serve as their creative partner across every touchpoint: designing the Independent Review of African American Art, a bi-annual publication; creating calendars, traveling exhibits, and Art in a Suitcase programs for young museum visitors; and developing all visual elements for temporary exhibitions—title treatments, didactic panels, labels, invitations, exterior banners, and gallery guides.

Our most recent work is the permanent Hampton Legacy gallery, a comprehensive exhibition celebrating the university’s history and impact. We worked closely with museum leadership to design a space that encompasses the university’s founding story, the renowned Hampton University Choir, military connections, local educational partnerships, athletic achievements, Native American educational contributions, and artistic legacies. A centerpiece installation features Oscar-winning costumes designed by Ruth Carter and worn by Denzel Washington, Oprah Winfrey, and Samuel L. Jackson, requiring specialized conservation considerations and security protocols while maintaining visitor accessibility.

This special partnership demonstrates our capacity to work within HBCU culture and adapt our design approach to reflect organizational values across decades of collaboration.
